This is my go-to rosé at home or in one of our restaurants; I nearly always have one unopened bottle in the fridge ready to go. Lukas van Loggerenberg is a star winemaker in South Africa: he named this wine after he broke his leg during his first vintage and he decided to make a rosé to help fund the medical bills. He makes it in a classic, pure, delicate style, full of strawberry fruit, but because it’s made from 32-year-old vines and aged in big French oak barrels it gives the wine a serious, refined edge. The world is going nuts for Provence rosé at the moment, but I find them a bit style over substance – this rosé has all that and more. Oh, and it’s a total showstopper with gremolata prawns or langoustines.
